•Solar Orbiter shows how solar wind gets a magnetic push
87% Informative
Solar Orbiter and NASA 's Parker Solar Probe studied solar wind in February 2022 .
Solar wind is a constant stream of charged particles that escapes from the solar atmosphere to flow past Earth .
Wind cools down as it expands into a larger volume and becomes less dense.
But it cools more slowly than expected from this effect alone.
Energy needed to power this outflow is coming from fluctuations in the sun's magnetic field.
Solar Orbiter is the only star in the universe where we can directly measure its wind.
The team is currently working on expanding their analysis to apply to slower forms of the solar wind, to see whether the sun's magnetic field energy plays a role in their acceleration and heating too.
