With no nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) having been to sea for over 50 days , I would say that we are at that point.
This has come to a head recently as diligent submarine watchers have associated the movement of US Navy Virginia class SSNs in and out of Faslane Naval Base in Scotland with movement of our ballistic nuclear missile armed submarines.
The idea is that one or more American SSNs may have been tasked to “delouse” a British deterrent sub heading out on patrol.
Most of the problems with docks and ageing and/or badly designed boats which have led to the current crisis were visible years ahead .
The current leadership is doing what they can to extricate us from this hole including accelerating the docking issue at its heart.
Other positives can be drawn from our maritime alliances clearly being in good order.
For this review to be different to the many that preceded it, strategy and finance must align.
