Filmmaker Ben Selkow's new series, Killer Lies : Chasing a True-Crime Con Man, debuts August 28 on National Geographic .
The three -part series is based on reporting by The New Yorker’s Lauren Collins in a 2022 piece titled “ The Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers ”.
The series examines our fascination with true crime, but acknowledges this doc’s very existence as complicity in contributing to trend.
The heart of it is the insinuation within the victim rights community that he himself was a victim and had a moral equivalency to share in the most intimate secrets of a very traumatized group.
The first interview we did with him was over five hours on camera, and then a day and a half at his house.
