Archer2, Britain ’s most powerful supercomputer, has power equivalent to a quarter of a million laptops.
It enabled scientists to run enormous simulations, crunching huge amounts of data through its 750,000 processor cores.
Just weeks ago , staff at Edinburgh University were preparing to go even further.
They had been awarded 800 m in government funding earmarked to build a “exascale” system far more powerful than Archer2.
But the current Government has shocked academics and technologists by tearing up the plans.
Mr Clifford appointed days before Government squashed supercomputer plans.
He himself has been a vocal advocate of spending more on AI processors.
Industry insiders have been urging Mr Clifford to come up with a solution to salvage something from the planned investment into compute.
Government has not ruled out investing in future AI computing projects, when funds allow.
