Researchers at Cranfield University have developed a technique called Spatial Offset Raman Spectroscopy or SORS.
The light-based technique can detect the unique chemical signature of real honey as well as the syrups that try to imitate it.
While the test isn't readily available yet, experts say consumers may be able to spot the frauds using nothing more than their phone torch within five to 10 years .
Optical spectroscopy analyses honey through how much light it absorbs or emits in specific wavelengths.
This technique has proved accurate in the lab using advanced equipment and carefully calibrated procedures.
Aston University scientist Dr Alex Rozhin thinks it could soon let customers test their own honey.
Micro-optical smartphone accessories have already demonstrated their value in lab settings.
