Mono Lake choanosPhys Org
•89% Informative
Choanoflagellate is a microscopic, single-celled form of life that can divide and develop into multicellular colonies.
It's not a type of animal, but a member of a sister group to all animals.
As animals' closest living relative, it's a crucial model for the leap from one -clled to multi-cellular life.
Surprisingly, it harbors its own microbiome, making it the first organism known to establish a stable relationship with bacteria.
A large colonial choanoflagellate from Mono Lake harbors live bacteria.
The bacterial populations were not identical, so evidently some bacteria survive better than others.
Future experiments should uncover how the bacteria interact with the choanos, says UC Berkeley researcher.
"There's a great deal more that needs to be done on the microbial life of Mono Lake," King says.
