Researchers used data from 58 deep earthquakes with magnitudes over 5.8 near New Guinea that occurred between 2008 and 2022 .
They found valleys and ridges along the core-mantle boundary where the waves traveled, or ULVZs.
These zones may be areas of volcanic rock basalt that melts easily and could form pockets where seismic waves slow.
