•Why Judge Merchan shouldn’t delay Trump’s New York sentencing
71% Informative
Julian Zelizer : Donald Trump is pushing for a delay in his criminal sentencing until after the election.
He says there is no basis for this latest delay under the law and Trump 's political purposes are so obvious, the court should reject it out of hand.
Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up interfering in the 2016 presidential election by paying hush money to an adult film actress to hide their affair.
John Avlon : Sentencing should not be delayed until after the election because it would prevent prosecutors from filing a sentencing submission.
Trump should not receive preferential treatment merely because he is a presidential candidate, Avlon says.
Sentencing hearing will provide valuable information about the crimes of which Trump was convicted, he says.
