Fannie Lou Hamer challenged the seating of Mississippi 's all-white delegation to the 1964 Democratic National Convention .
"If the Freedom Democratic Party is not seated now, I question America ," Hamer told the credentials committee.
"Our challenge as Americans is to make sure that this experiment called democracy is not just for the landed gentry or the wealthy, but it is for everybody," Rep. Bennie Thompson says.
Hamer helped organize Freedom Summer , a campaign to educate and register Black voters.
"State-sanctioned violence" is among the many issues from Hamer's 1964 testimony that still resonate, historian says.
Hamer feared both abortion and birth control were "white supremacist tools to regulate the lives of impoverished Black people" Hamer kept speaking after the convention, famously saying she was "sick and tired of being sick and tired".
