'You got "the man" with you': Looking back on Steve McNair's groundbreaking 1994 season at Alcorn State

Alcorn State quarterback Steve McNair was the first player from a historically Black college or university to land an invite to the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

During McNair 's senior season, he threw for 5,377 yards and 47 touchdowns and rushed for 904 yards .

He became the highest drafted HBCU offensive player ever when he was drafted with the third pick in the 1995 NFL draft.

Alcorn State coach Steve McNair led the team to a SWAC championship in 1992 .

McNair was told he would be a first- or second -round pick if he decided to leave Alcorn for the NFL draft in 1994 .

His mother Lucille McNair urged him to return for one last season .

Alcorn's 1994 opener against Grambling was a sign of what was to come that season.

McNair was 264 yards from passing former BYU quarterback Ty Detmer ( 14,665 yards ) to become the NCAA career leader in total offense.

He led Alcorn to victory over Southern in October , breaking the Division I-AA record.

"If there's a better player in this country, I don't know where he is," Jones says.
