Stanford Medicine study: For some older adults with kidney failure, dialysis may not be the best option.
Starting dialysis when kidney function fell below a certain threshold, researchers found.
Patients who waited to start dialysis on average lived on average nine days longer than those who waited, but spent 13 more days at home.
"Currently, dialysis is often framed to patients as a choice between life and death," says Emily Moskal .
"When it's presented in this way, patients don't have room to consider whether the treatment aligns with their goals," she says.
When treatment is framed as symptom-alleviating, patients can more readily understand that there are trade-offs.
