•It’s justice, not revenge: top prosecutor warns rioters could get ten years
55% Informative
Director of Public Prosecution Service Stephen Parkinson said the number of charges is expected to soar.
Many of those charged so far have been prosecuted for violent disorder, which carries a maximum sentence of five years .
Parkinson said that the more serious offence of rioting - which carries up to a ten-year penalty - was now under consideration.
Lammy 's Tottenham constituency was the epicentre of the 2011 riots.
He said there were parallels with the violence of the past fortnight.
Lammy added that the criminals who in 2011 “saw violent disorder as an enormous grab-and-go party” only stopped after they were “named and shamed checked and confronted”.
