Nigel Farage’s uncertain response to the riots this week may prove the point.

His first reaction, in the immediate aftermath of the terrible killings in Southport , was to wonder “if the truth is being withheld from us” But within a few days , Farage was stressing his opposition to violence, adding “as for the Tommy Robinsons and those who stir up hatred, well, I've never had anything to do with them”.

At the start of the week , the far-Right seemed to be on the march.

At the end of it, they were nowhere to be seen, and the Left-wing activists thronged the streets.

Perhaps the riots will simply fizzle out as the weather cools.

But perhaps the media has got them out of all proportion.
