Cybersecurity researcher Jon DiMaggio was able to figure out LockBitSupp ’s real identity before it was publicly revealed by the authorities.
On Friday , he gave a talk at the Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas .
He explained how he gained his trust using a made-up persona that would make it easier to reach out to LockBit and its administrator.
LockBitSupp went offline for around twelve days , but didn’t stop communicating with DiMaggio .
LockBit claimed responsibility for a cyberattack against a Chicago community hospital that treats children in Chicago .
Law enforcement took down LockBit ’s website, and at least temporarily disrupted the gang’s operation.
DiMaggio said he hopes to show how researchers can find out information about cybercriminals by infiltrating their groups.
He also said he wants researchers to know that doing what he did could carry consequences.
“Nobody gets out of this unscathed,” he said, “when you go f—k with criminals like this.
