•New report on Great Barrier Reef shows coral cover increases before onset of serious bleaching, cyclones
79% Informative
Coral cover has increased in all three regions on the Great Barrier Reef and is at regional highs in two of the three regions.
But the results come with a note of caution.
Most of the underwater surveys were conducted before and during the recent mass bleaching event, one of the most extensive and serious on record, and have not yet captured how many corals survived or died.
AIMS is prioritising research to develop scientific solutions to boost reef resilience under a warming climate.
"Climate change is increasing pressure on reef systems around the world," says CEO Professor Selina Stead .
"We still don't know how much mortality this event has caused," she said.
