ESO 428-G14 is an active galaxy located around 70 million light-years from Earth .

It has a central region or "active galactic nucleus" ( AGN ) that emits powerful and intense light across the electromagnetic spectrum due to the presence of a supermassive black hole that is greedily feasting on matter around it.

Energy heating this swirling cloud of gas and dust actually comes from collisions with jets of gas traveling at near-light-speeds.

The team's research was published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society .

"I feel incredibly lucky to be part of the GATOS team," says Houda Haidar , a PhD student in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University .
