Cindy Ngamba came to Britain while still a child, her family escaping from unrest and discrimination in their home country of Cameroon .
Like Mo Farah , she was confronted by prejudice at school (in hers at school she was singled out for her weight, her hair, the way she spoke) and discovered purpose, direction and the respect of her peers through a sport she had never encountered before she arrived in Britain .
Her official status is as a Training Partner of the GB Boxing squad.
But she has never received British citizenship.
Cindy Winner Ngamba is the first representative of the Refugee team ever to win a medal at the Games.
She became the first British refugee to win an Olympic gold medal at this Games.
Ngamba was readily accepted into the 38 -person strong Refugee Team for these Games, and was gifted the opportunity to be the group’s flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony .
