A startup is developing reactors capable of turning CO2 emissions into ocean salts.
The process is similar to what’s already naturally happening in the oceans, says Jess Adkins , a chemical oceanographer from Caltech .
Adkins says with a full-scale reactor, he aims to capture and store about half of a ship's emissions.
The company has built two prototype reactors, one in the USC parking lot and one in Los Angeles .
Some cargo ships already have similar devices on board, called scrubbers, which capture and discharge sulfur emissions but not CO2.
Calcarea ’s reactors capture sulfur as part of their CO2 removal process.
Adkins believes that the reactors could help the industry decarbonize during the transition to greener fuel.
