U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin signs orders to move additional assets and capabilities to the Middle East and parts of Europe .
The Pentagon says the move is necessary to "mitigate the possibility of regional escalation by Iran or Iran 's partners and proxies" Iran 's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , calls for retribution for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah commander in Lebanon .
" Iran will likely carefully calibrate its response to the Israelis ," a retired U.S. vice admiral says.
"They [the Iranians ] are fully aware of the regional implications of any direct or indirect attack on Israel with or without surrogates," he says.
The Pentagon insists a further escalation between Iran and Israel "is not inevitable".
