Texas A&M University led a team of experts to find out why a white, chalky substance was growing on the Alamo cannon.

The cannon was used in several key battles during its lifetime, including the Battle of Medina in 1813 and Concepción in 1835 .

A dilute solution of formic acid removed the chalky deposits that formed on the cannon's surface without damaging underlying metal.
