Hydrogen-powered flying taxi completes record 561-mile journey

The first hydrogen-powered vertical takeoff aircraft has made its longest flight.

Joby Aviation completed a record 561-mile ( 902km ) test flight over California .

The flying car is powered by six propellers, which give it the ability to take off and land vertically like a helicopter.

The craft is fueled by hydrogen, meaning it produces no emissions other than water vapour.

It has already completed 25,000 miles ( 40,000 km ) of test flights in Marina , California and New York .

Larry Page , CEO of Google parent company Alphabet , has poured millions into aviation start-ups Zee Aero and Kitty Hawk , which are both striving to create all-electric flying cabs.

Kitty Hawk is believed to be developing a flying car and has already filed more than a dozen different aircraft registrations with the Federal Aviation Administration .

AirSpaceX unveiled its latest prototype, Mobi-One , at the North American International Auto Show in early 2018 .

The electric aircraft is designed to carry two to four passengers and is capable of vertical take-off and landing.

Even Uber is working on making its ride-hailing service airborne.
