Local SWAT team at the Butler Trump rally at the fairgrounds in Butler , Pennsylvania , shared their story with ABC News .
"It just seemed out of place," said one of the team's snipers, Gregory Nicol .
Team members say lack of planning and communication caused a catastrophic failure in the protection of Donald Trump .
"This one is something that we'll always carry with us," said assistant SWAT leader Mike Priolo .
Beaver County sniper: "We're a scalpel, when you're asking us to be used as a hammer" "If we're asked for assistance, we will provide it," says SWAT medic Michel Vasiladiotis-Nicol .
"We weren't again if it was a mass casualty or what we were walking into," he says.
"That's when I heard the gunshots," says sniper Gregory Nicol .
DA: "I think with some better planning perhaps, it could have been stopped" Trump was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors treated a wound to his ear.
