Since 1964 , archaeologists have found 15 different tablets with strange carvings at the site of an ancient settlement in Jordan .
They were likely made by the Canaanites , an indigenous group who thrived in the Middle East until the second half of the 13th century BC .
The script was written from left to right, and featured 29 unique symbols of dots, vertical bars and other abstract designs.
Researchers suggested that the inscriptions are short cultic proverbs related to the religious temple they were found in, which was destroyed thousands of years ago .
