Robinson to hold fundraiser with NC church previously investigated for slavery, child abuse

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is holding a fundraiser with Word of Faith Fellowship .

The secretive religious group has been accused of using cult-like control over its followers.

Some of the accusations against the group have resulted in criminal convictions; church leaders deny the rest.

Robinson has made speaking at churches a key part of his campaign.

Robinson ’s anti-gay rhetoric has made him popular in evangelical circles and helped spur his meteoric rise in GOP politics.

But his most socially conservative views could turn off moderate or undecided voters who often decide statewide elections in North Carolina .

It remains to be seen if moderates and old-school conservative Democrats who backed him will back Stein .

Church leaders and followers have already given tens of thousands of dollars to Robinson ’s 2024 campaign.

The church has been accused of using missionary work in South America and Africa to lure foreign pilgrims to its compound in Rutherford County .

The Associated Press reported in 2017 that the U.S. government and the Brazilian government had begun investigating those allegations of immigration fraud and forced labor.
