Nearly half of tattoo and permanent makeup ink samples found to be contaminated with bacteria.
The FDA has warned for years about contamination in body inks sold in the U.S. Since 2003 , the agency says tattoo makers have conducted 18 recalls over inks.
The study is the first to look at both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in these inks, the FDA says.
