President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964 , prohibiting discrimination and segregation based on race, color, sex, religion and national origin.
As a young man growing up in the South , I obeyed all the Jim Crow rules, as did every Black person I knew.
I was about the same age as Emmett Till , whose lynching in Mississippi in 1955 made news all over the world.
But just because America worked for me does not mean it works for every black person.
