Penn State University scientists have performed simulations of neutron star mergers.
They found that the point at which these dead stars meet (the interface) becomes incredibly hot and dense.
Neutron stars are born when a massive star with at least eight times the mass of the sun runs out of nuclear fusion at its core.
Neutrinos are also created during the first moments of a neutron star merger as neutrons are ripped apart.
The researchers wanted to know what could be happening during these initial moments.
They created simulations that use a huge amount of computing power to model the merger of binary neutron stars and the physics associated with such events.
