At the end of September 2022 , the Nord Stream gas pipeline on the bottom of the Baltic Sea exploded east of Bornholm .
The methane gas from the pipeline created large bubbles on the water surface.
But much of the methane never reached the surface, and dissolved in the water instead.
This is according to a study published in Scientific Reports .
