NASA has released stunning observations of the heart of a distant galaxy.
The observations were conducted by the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) XRISM was able to distinguish fingerprints of iron in this galaxy's Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) NGC 4151 shines brightly because it is powered by a supermassive black hole.
XRISM can also detect sulfur, calcium, argon and others in AGNs.
Iron is absorbing rather than emitting in these regions because they're cooler than the flaring patches of the accretion disk close to the black hole.
Each of these elements can tell scientists a different aspect of the stories of the celestial bodies they surround.
