The Gulf Stream is part of a wider system of currents, officially called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which scientists say could collapse as early as 2025 .
The AMOC transports warm water near the ocean's surface northwards from the tropics up to the northern hemisphere.
