Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin call ahead of China 's Lunar New Year .

Xi tells Putin the two sides should “strengthen strategic coordination” and “safeguard the national sovereignty, security and development interests of their respective countries’s respective countries.

The leaders also had a “detailed exchange” on the situation in several regions, including the Middle East , and discussed “the current situation” in Ukraine .
