Ottessa Moshfegh's novel Eileen is the first of her novels to make it to the big screen.
The film, directed by William Oldroyd of Lady Macbeth, stars Thomasin McKenzie as the lowly and lonely figure, who lives with an abusive drunk of a father (Shea Whigham) and falls under the spell of the new psychiatrist.
I had never really thought of her as being a really strong person, but maybe that’s because I felt I had to have power over her because she was my character. In placing her into the movie, I was, like, God, she’s been through a lot, and she’s still trying to find herself. That takes so much courage.”.
