Fossilised remains belonging to the creature were discovered in 162-million-year-old rocks in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwest China in 1987.
Palaeontologists say the late Jurassic sauropod known as Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum potentially had the longest neck of any animal that has ever existed.
That made it more than six times longer than a giraffe's neck and 1.5 times the length of a double-decker bus.
These bundles would have stiffened the neck of Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum, increasing its stability.
They were connected to the lungs and windpipe but spread throughout the animal's neck, chest and abdomen.
Professor Paul Barrett, of the Natural History Museum in London, said: 'These air sacs had a much greater volume than the lungs'.
