A new UN report warns that heat deaths among people 65+ have risen 85% since the 1990s .
Older people have weaker immune systems and reduced thermoregulation, which means they have trouble maintaining an even body temperature.
The majority of those deaths occurred at home, which is why extreme heat responses and precautions need to consider the specific needs of older people who might have a difficult time making it to cooling centres.
Kappelle described them as “neighbourhood watch programs” that would act as volunteer networks who check in on each other, particularly older people.
Bhargava said that could involve increased funding to community-based groups who already do that work.
“We really hope to influence policymakers around the world so they are aware of these matters, influencing national policies, local or municipal to take proactive action,” he said.
