More than 90% of resident doctors in England voted in favour of strike action.
The term "resident doctor" replaced "junior doctors" last year , in a bid to better reflect their expertise and responsibilities.
Doctors and teachers in England and Wales were offered a 4% pay rise by the government.
Other NHS workers will get a 3.6% pay increase effective from 1 April .
