B.C. Ferries has refused to let a tow truck carrying a damaged EV board a vessel, citing the risk of combustion in damaged lithium-ion batteries.
Ferries says it's about safety and shoring up its policies to abide by federal regulations related to the transportation of hazardous goods that state that the “transport of non-operational electric vehicles is currently not permitted”.
The risk with EV batteries is combustion in what is termed thermal runaway, a situation where temperatures inside a damaged battery’s cells spike causing an intense, chemical-reaction fire that burns at extremely high temperatures that is difficult to extinguish.
Porter argued that the risk of thermal runaway decreases sharply 48 hours after damage occurs.
