Researchers have discovered a dramatic and unexpected shift in the Southern Ocean , with surface water salinity rising and sea ice in steep decline.
This has coincided with a dramatic loss of sea ice around Antarctica and the re-emergence of the Maud Rise polynya in the Weddell Sea - a huge hole in the sea ice nearly four times the size of Wales .
