The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile released its first images of the night sky on Monday .
The telescope's primary project, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time , will begin later this year .
Each night, the observatory will snap about 1,000 high-definition photos each night.
Rubin will take pictures of about 20 billion galaxies over the next 10 years .
Scientists are trying to learn more about dark energy, a mysterious force that seems to be pushing the universe to expand faster over time.
By comparing millions of these explosions across different distances, Rubin might be able to piece together whether dark energy is changing.
This could rewrite what we know about the universe's age and what's to come in the future.
