HIV is surging among adults over 50 in sub-Saharan Africa , yet campaigns still focus mainly on the young.

By 2040 , one-quarter of people living with HIV in Africa will be aged 50 years and older.

Persistent stigma, outdated perceptions, and limited education or access in rural areas worsen the situation, especially for older women.

Widowed women had the highest HIV rate ( 30.8% ) and those without formal education and low income also had higher rates of HIV infection.

Data for the study were drawn from the Africa Wits-INDEPTH Partnership for Genomic Research (AWI-Gen) from adults aged 40 years and older.
